One of the issues with purchasing a MINDSTORMS set has always been going beyond what the LEGO designers have presented in the set instructions. With the NXT, there were four models that could be built with instructions. With the EV3, there are a dozen or so models that are available online to build. However, the problem still remains when a builder has done all the models: what does he or she do next?

The LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Idea Book is a great book to learn the building possibilities of the MINDSTORMS set, namely the MINDSTORMS EV3 Retail Set. In the 232 full-color pages, there are dozens of constructions that can be used by the beginner and expert builder to make their EV3 robots move and do many different things, like the models seen below:

There is very little text in this book, and that's good, as the photos show construction details (if the model is complex, different angles and and model breakdowns are used) to make building relatively simple. All the parts in the models are in the Retail set, so part hunting is kept to a minimum.

The book is broken up into sections to allow readers to go directly to the building ideas they want, like movement or grippers. There's also a tutorial on gearing, again using minimal text. The result is a book that is accessible to almost anyone who wants to build.

The LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Idea Book is a great book for all robotics and TECHNIC builders, including FIRST LEGO League teams. This book is highly recommended, and can be purchased from No Starch Press in both hardcopy and digital form. Through No Starch, you can buy both versions - the digital version is great for team use!
